The Safety Team Committee is responsible for ensuring the safety, security, and emergency preparedness of the mosque and its attendees. In today’s world, a well-organized safety team is essential for protecting worshippers, especially during large gatherings such as Jumu’ah, Ramadan, Eid, and community events.
Key Roles and Responsibilities of a Mosque Safety Team Committee
1. Ensure the Physical Safety of Worshippers
- Monitor entrances, exits, and key areas during prayers and events.
- Watch for suspicious activity, unauthorized individuals, or safety concerns.
- Assist with crowd control during busy times (e.g., Jumu’ah, Eid prayers, or funerals).
2. Develop and Implement Security Procedures
- Establish protocols for:
- Lockdowns
- Active shooter or intruder scenarios
- Fire evacuation
- Medical emergencies
- Lost children
- Make sure staff, volunteers, and congregants are aware of safety protocols.
3. Emergency Response and First Aid
- Train team members in basic first aid, CPR, and emergency response.
- Keep first aid kits and emergency supplies available and stocked.
- Respond quickly to on-site medical or safety emergencies.
4. Create an Emergency Action Plan (EAP)
- Develop and regularly review a written Emergency Action Plan tailored to the mosque.
- Include maps, exits, assembly points, roles of team members, and contact info.
- Practice emergency drills with staff and volunteers.
5. Liaison with Local Law Enforcement & Emergency Services
- Establish a working relationship with:
- Local police
- Fire department
- EMS/ambulance services
- Invite them to tour the facility and advise on safety improvements.
- Request security presence for high-attendance events when necessary.
6. Monitor and Maintain Security Equipment
- Oversee installation and maintenance of:
- Security cameras (CCTV)
- Motion detectors or alarms
- Communication systems (walkie-talkies, PA systems)
- Lighting in parking lots and entrances
- Ensure surveillance systems are working and footage is reviewed if needed.
7. Parking Lot and Traffic Safety
- Manage traffic flow during busy events (e.g., Jumu’ah, Eid).
- Coordinate volunteers or hire security to guide vehicles safely.
- Prevent accidents or congestion in mosque parking areas.
8. Protect Children and Vulnerable Attendees
- Implement child safety protocols for youth programs or classes.
- Help reunite lost children with parents quickly.
- Ensure that sisters’ and family areas are secure and respected.
9. Inspect the Facility for Hazards
- Conduct regular walk-throughs to check for:
- Fire risks
- Trip hazards
- Faulty lighting or locks
- Blocked exits
- Work with the Facilities Committee to correct any issues.
10. Training and Awareness
- Train safety team volunteers on:
- Conflict de-escalation
- Emergency procedures
- Respectful engagement with the public
- Educate the community on how to respond during emergencies.
